    Prove your plant knowledge!

The next Certified Plant Professional (CPP) Exam will take place on Thursday, July 25th from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, in Missoula, MT.

Eligible applicants need to apply online by following the link to register, or submit a completed application, documentation of nursery employment and the appropriate fees to the MNLA office by July 15th. Download the application form here.

We have negotiated a discounted room block at the Holiday Inn Downtown for out-of-town CPP exam registrants. Follow this link to book online (note that the booking link is not mobile-compatible), or call the hotel at: 406.721.8550 and request the "MNLA Summer Tour 2024" group block. Rate is $259/night and subject to availability.

The certification tests are generally given twice a year, in January at the annual Montana Green Expo and in July at the annual Summer Tour. The exam consists of a plant identification test and a written test. The exam is based on the Certification Manual and on practical information gained from employment in the industry, and on identification of the correct genus, species, common name, and cultivar (if appropriate) for each plant.

The ID portion of the exam involves identifying 50 plant samples, and is based upon plants covered in Choosing Trees and Shrubs for Montana Landscapes, by George Evans and Alan Epps, as well as lists of Montana perennials and woody plants. These publications and lists are included in the manual. The second portion of the exam is a 200 question written exam on the principles and practices of virtually all aspects of the nursery industry. A passing grade is 75% for both parts of the exam. Bring at least two sharpened pencils to take the exam. We also recommend that you bring several sheets of scratch paper.

Please see the Education & Certification page on our site for details on eligibility and renewal as well as a number of additional forms and how to order your CPP Manual (a highly recommended book for preparing for the exam). Manuals can be ordered by submitting an order form to the MNLA office.

Thank you to Caras Nursery for hosting the exam!

Where will the Summer Tour be stopping this year? Here's a sneak-peak:

    • Garden City Compost was created with the City of Missoula purchased EKO Compost in November 2016. They have been improving and upgrading their composting processes ever since. They serve a vital role in resource recovery in their community; the amount of material being diverted from the landfill has increased significantly through community outreach and partnerships with local businesses. This allows them to provide high quality compose while consistently improving practices to better control odor.
    • Greenbench Orchard is an organic "U-Pick" apple and raspberry orchard. They cultivate 185 trees, including 8 varieties of apples:  Honeycrisp, Goodland, Goodmac, Kerr Crab, Liberty, Spartan, Wealthy, and Haralson. Raspberry varieties include Nova and Boyne. Come learn how they do it!
    • Millay & Meadowlark Cut Flower Farm is nestled into the serene Clark Fork River Valley, where they specialize in locally grown, seasonal flowers, using organic and sustainable growing practices. A labor of love, their business was conceived as a means of creating meaningful and engaging work for their son, Connor, who has down syndrome. They are committed to providing Connor with opportunities to maintain and learn new life skills and to be a vibrant contributor and member of our community. They hope to extend employment opportunities to other individuals with disabilities in the future as their business grows.
    • The Missoula Butterfly House & Insectarium was founded by passionate bug enthusiasts eager to bring a butterfly house to Missoula. Founded in 2009, they slowly built an exhibit area showcasing live arthropod species found throughout the world (as well as right here in Montana), curriculum focusing on pre-school to 8th grade, and public programs geared to all ages. The Insectarium fosters a curiosity for and awareness of "The Little Things That Run the World". In December of 2023, they proudly expanded to open the first tropical butterfly house in Montana!
    • Rocky Mountain Gardens & Exploration Center is home to 2.5 acres of premier education gardens, a demonstration kitchen, green roof, greenhouse, plant lab, and classrooms. It also houses the Missoula Butterfly House and Missoula County Extension Offices. The center connects people to the land and builds lifelong stewardship for the Western Montana landscape and appreciation for the plants and insects that make it thrive.
    • Caras Nursery has roots in the Missoula community that go back over 100 years. Founded in 1896 as The Missoula Nursery, it was later renamed by James K. Caras, a Greek immigrant, when he purchased the nursery and integrated it into his existing downtown business, Garden City Floral. The nursery was eventually renamed Caras Nursery, and in 1977 James' son Bill came on board and spurred a tremendous amount of growth, making Caras the unparalleled destination it is today.
    • The DNRC Conservation Seedling Nursery has been growing conservation seedling for almost 100 years! The nursery was established in 1927 and currently grows trees and other plants for conservation from seed that staff and community members collect across Montana. With a mission to protect species from extinction, maintain and restore habitats, enhance ecosystem services, and protect biological diversity, the nursery plays an integral role in conservation across the state.
    • Botanica Orchids is a orchid growers that specializes in seed-grown orchids, specifically endangered angraecoid species that are primarily from Africa and Madagascar. Their efforts focus on taking the pressure off native populations by reducing collection from native habitats. This includes supporting the unique pollination requirements of the varied orchid species that they cultivate. In addition to endangered species, they also grow many other orchids and tillandsias.
    • ....plus a few great residential landscape sites by Pro Sweep Plus and Marchie's Nursery.

These publications and lists are included in the manual. The second portion of the exam is a 200 question written exam of the principles and practices of virtually all aspects of the nursery industry.

Manuals are available as either a hard-copy version or PDF format, and can be ordered by submitting an order form to the MNLA office before December 15th.

    REGISTRATION INFORMATION

    1

Booth Reservations:  You can request up to three choices for booth location. Check the 2025 Expo Map for available booths. We will do our best to accommodate your booth choice, but know that booths fill up quickly and the space you request may no longer be available. We will contact you with alternative options if this occurs. You can also download the Booth Booking Form and email in your registration if you prefer.  A booth contract will be sent to you once we have assigned a booth per your choices. Payments are due within 15 days of booking your space.

    2

Name Badge and Special Event Tickets: When you know which representatives will attend, you can complete the Name Badge and Special Event Registration Form and return it to: expo@plantingmontana.org. This allows you to sign up your representatives who will be in the booth during the EXPO. Your pre-registration gives us a better count for ordering food for luncheons, etc.  This also allows us to provide your representatives with pre-printed badges. If you do not pre-register your representatives, you will have to hand print your badges at the show.

One FREE Convention registration is included with your booth fee, and also includes all conference seminars on Wednesday and Thursday, plus lunch on Wednesday for that person. They must have a Convention badge to attend the seminars and keynote speeches. If you wish to register additional representatives for the convention seminars, you can add them on the Name Badge and Special Event Registration Form. This form will be emailed to all exhibitors prior to the EXPO. If your representatives plan to attend additional meals and/or special events like the Awards Banquet or Thursday Lunch, they will need to register for those events. Download the Exhibitor Name Badge and Special Event Registration Form and indicate which events they will be attending, the names of each representative, and email to: expo@plantingmontana.org

The seminar schedule will be linked here when available.
